The Problem With Zero-Point Energy
...What is zero-point energy, and could it really power an advanced civilisation? Short answer is no, but It's still really fun scifi.
Stargate Atlantis introduced Zero Point Modules (ZPMs) as one of the most iconic technologies in science fiction. They extract energy from an artificial region of spacetime, providing enormous amounts of power while still obeying the rules of thermodynamics within the show's fictional universe.
But zero-point energy is also a real concept in quantum physics and it's frequently misused to promote claims of "free energy" devices, perpetual motion machines, and conspiracy theories.
In this deep dive, we explore the real physics behind zero-point energy, vacuum fluctuations, the Casimir effect, Hawking radiation, vacuum decay and why there is no known physics that allows us to extract unlimited energy from the vacuum. We'll also look at why Stargate's ZPMs are actually much better science fiction than many real-world pseudoscientific claims.
Also, I've started playing around with creating some graphics using python which I hope help with the visuals but are a work in progress so bear with me while I work on making them better.
If you enjoy science fiction, quantum physics, and separating real science from internet myths, you're in the right place.
Stay nerdy.
