ZPEnergy.com - DOE announces new energy initiatives

Posted by zogger on Technocrat.net: In a pair of announcements, the US Department of Energy has announced initiatives for both Concentrating Solar Power projects in the western states, and for a new Nuclear Plant Licensing Demonstration Project. A little something for everyone on the energy front.

Yesterday, the DOE announced an effort to Install 1000 MW of Concentrating Solar Power Systems in a regional, five-year Agreement backed by the Western Governor's Association.

“This exciting initiative will provide a substantial engine for economic development, job creation, air quality improvements and new, non-polluting sources of electricity supply for the region,” Acting Under Secretary of Energy David Garman said. “The federal long-term goal is to lower the cost of CSP technology to 7 cents/kilowatt-hour from the current cost of 12-14 cents/kilowatt-hour.”

And in further energy news, the DOE will begin the first phase of Nuclear Plant Licensing Demonstration projects.

The NuStart Energy consortium will evaluate the Westinghouse Advanced Passive Pressurized Water Reactor (AP-1000) and the General Electric Economic Simplified Boiling Water Reactor (ESBWR). The consortium plans to select a final reactor technology and a site by 2007. If a nuclear power plant order results from this work, NuStart Energy could also have a new nuclear power plant in operation as early as 2014.
