Electrects explained
Posted on Tuesday, May 17, 2005 @ 01:32:13 GMT by rob

General Electrets have always fascinated me. Bearden has a page explaining how they work.

http://www.cheniere.org/references/electret.htm

I encourage everyone to read that, and also checkout other resources. You'll find that there isn't that much info on electrets, only a few describing their manufacturing.

The next question one should ask is why aren't electrets used as sources of electrical energy?

Even though electrets create an electric field and may interact with the vacuum flux, electrets can't produce a sustained flow of current. Because the charges are fixed, once a connection from positive to negative is established, charges in the conductor will move until that static field is neutralised. After that there is no energy flow.

Sure you can't get electrical energy out of them directly, but what if you used an electret as a sort of "electron bait", to coax static charges out of the environment without actually discharging the electret? Send the attracted charges through the load without expending the charge on the electret?
