Dr Jim Hunter told a conference on renewable energy that it should finish the job (i.e. insure approval) of the Highland Clearances. (A controversial Scottish windfarm proposal). Dr Hunter, former chairman of Highlands and Islands Enterprise, said Scottish communities would be obliterated over the next two generations by climate change. First of all the "Highland Clearances" were in the 19th century when Scottish landowners forcibly removed farming tenants to make way for profitable sheep. It's not a windfarm proposal. Second Dr. Hunter is stating that global warming will finish the job that the Highland Clearances started. Third that unless the objectors to windfarms stop objecting then they are helping the above to happen. The Roman Empire collapsed because of climate change caused by over use of agricultural land for growing food, it became much drier in the area surrounding the Mediterraneean. This may have also caused regions further north of the Empire to experience colder weather, and the peoples fleeing that cold weather eventually ran into the borders of the Empire and invaded it. Something just as dramatic could happen if the thermocline in the Atlantic fails and Europe begins to experience the same kind of winters as Northern Canada. 500 million people have to go somewhere else to survive, that means trouble for wherever those people decide to squat. My best guess is that if forced, the European peoples would head south into Africa and the Middle East.
