Playing With Fire: Mankind’s Planet-wide Experiment

Address to Committee for Economic Development of Australia by Stanford University professor Stephen H. Schneider

Stephen H. Schneider is a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, a Senior Fellow at the Center for Environment Science and Policy of the Institute for International Studies, and Professor by Courtesy in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University since September, 1992.

In July 2003, he spoke in the New South Wales State Parliament House to the Committee for Economic Development of Australia. He is regarded as one of the leading proponents of anthropomorphic-generated global climate change. He argues that mankind is conducting a planet-wide science experiment by releasing billions of tons of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. He is critical of climate change dissenters he says have a vested interest in continuing to freely emit pollution without having to pay for it.

He is particularly critical of gas-guzzlers and proposes that if people want to drive trucks, including light trucks and SUVs, be required to have a truck driver’s license and drive in the right-hand lane at 55 mph. Failure to comply earns the offender a "big ticket" for violating the rules. He sees this as completely consistent, free market solution to the problem of gas-guzzling SUVs.

He drives a Honda Civic Hybrid, himself.

This 34-minute presentation is available in MP3 format that you can play using either the Flash-based Player above or by downloading it to your computer hard drive for later playback. This is one of the best discussions we’ve heard on the subject of global warming and why we can’t afford to wait for the last piece of confirming evidence that mankind is the culprit, not nature.

THE END OF CHEAP GAS: U.S. AUTOMAKERS ARE RUNNING ON EMPTY, December 22
The federal government recently acknowledged that the era of cheap gas has come to an end. Now it's high time that U.S. automakers did the same, says University of Michigan auto industry expert Walter McManus.

STORING CARBON TO COMBAT GLOBAL WARMING MAY CAUSE OTHER ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS, STUDY, December 22
Growing tree plantations to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to mitigate global warming -- so called "carbon sequestration" -- could trigger environmental changes that outweigh some of the benefits, a multi-institutional team led by Duke University suggested in a new report. Those effects include water and nutrient depletion and increased soil salinity and acidity, said the researchers.
