General In the last few years, more and more research has focused on the biosphere; particularly, on how gases which influence the climate are exchanged between the biosphere and atmosphere. Researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics have now carefully analysed which organic gases are emitted from plants. They made the surprising discovery that plants release methane, a greenhouse gas - and this goes against all previous assumptions.

REWRITING GLACIAL HISTORY IN PACIFIC NORTH AMERICA, January 11
Although the story on glacier fluctuations in northwestern North America over the last 10,000 years has remained largely unchanged for decades, new evidence discovered by a University of Alberta researcher will rewrite that glacial history and offer clues about our climate history during the last several thousand years.

RESEARCHERS CONFIRM ROLE OF MASSIVE FLOOD IN CLIMATE CHANGE, January 10
Climate modelers at the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) have succeeded in reproducing the climate changes caused by a massive freshwater pulse into the North Atlantic that occurred at the beginning of the current warm period 8,000 years ago. Their work is the first to consistently model the event and the first time that the model results have been validated by comparison to the record of climate proxies that scientists regularly use to study the Earth's past.

'DOOMSDAY VAULT' TO HOUSE WORLD'S SEEDS, January 11
Norway is to build a "doomsday vault" in a mountain close to the North Pole that will house a vast seed bank to ensure food supplies in the event of catastrophic climate change, nuclear war or rising sea levels, New Scientist says.

CLIMATE CHANGE PLAN TAKES HEAT OFF US, AUSTRALIA, January 13
While environmentalists contend a climate change plan agreed by some of the world's worst polluters this week will do little to halt global warming, analysts say it will reduce political pressure on the United States and Australia to sign the Kyoto Protocol.
