McCain offers $300 million for new auto battery
Posted on Monday, June 23, 2008 @ 23:03:42 GMT by vlad

General From Forbes.com by GLEN JOHNSON / Associated Press: FRESNO, Calif. - John McCain is hoping to solve the country's energy crisis with cold hard cash. The presumed Republican nominee on Monday proposed a $300 million government prize to whoever can develop an automobile battery that far surpasses existing technology. The bounty would equate to $1 for every man, woman and child in the country, "a small price to pay for helping to break the back of our oil dependency," McCain said at Fresno State University...

I thought this had already been done and was under test in Japan using the ultrcapacitor idea?

Yeah... EEStor is supposed to release their Ultracapacitor/battery tech in a couple of weeks.  From the article published in http://www.financialpost.com/story.html?id=613448

"Sometime over the next several weeks, a privately-held and ultra-secretive company named EEStor Inc. based in Cedar Park, Texas is expected to release the results of independent third-party testing of its electrical energy storage unit, which aims to replace the electrochemical batteries we now use in everything from hybrid cars to laptop computers. EEStor says its system, combining battery and ultracapacitor technology and based on modified barium titanate ceramic powder, could power a car for 400 kilometres with regular performance. It claims the unit would charge in a few minutes and weigh less than 10% of current lead-acid batteries for the same cost."

Sounds like a winner to me!
