Thor Power: Revolutionary Electric Motor Design Cuts Energy Use in Half
Posted on Thursday, July 24, 2008 @ 22:00:42 UTC by vlad

Devices Traditional electric motor designs (left) haven't changed substantially since 1906. Thor Power's technology uses rare earth magnets, resulting in a motor that generates twice the power at half the weight and double the efficiency (right).

Electric motors consume 67 percent of the energy produced in the United States, yet their fundamental technology hasn't changed much in the past 100 years. Thor Power, a resident company in the Ben Franklin Business Incubator, is well on its way to commercializing an entirely new electric motor design that could have a dramatic impact on nearly every sector of society.

Alternating current (AC) motors are used extensively in many products, including refrigerators, air conditioners, power tools, washers, dryers and computers. The basic design, perfected in the late 1800s, involves supplying an external stator with an electrical current to produce a rotating magnetic field. This electromagnetic field spins the rotor that rests inside the stator. Such a design is only 47 percent efficient in its use of electricity, according to Dave Bonner, CEO of the Bethlehem-based company...

Revolutionary? Have been past ten years cheek by jowl with brushless motors and generators - I dont see any novelnesses - just modest PM brushless machines. "... using several parallel strands to minimize copper losses." - wherer novelty? Multistranded or Liz wire is primary when slotless motors! Even some sloted motors use Lits wire. And "back-iron assembly is composed of very thin non-oriented silicon steel laminations which minimize core losses" - my good! O,12mm...0,2mm thick laminations have beenm used past 5 years. And not only Silicon steel (cheap!) the best is CobaltSteel or MetGlas and powder technology based SMC. Even the best of RC (remote conrolled) model motors have efficient up to (or even higher than) 90%. RC motors does not use the most novel/best materials because the cost of (nobody able to buy ;-) - but anyway:

Motortyp 3060: 50000 U/min ca. 8 KW ( bei η / Pmax.)
2. Motortyp 3080: 50000 U/min ca.11 KW ( bei η / Pmax.)
6. Alle Wirkungsgradangaben ( enthalten Verluste von Motor und Controller, z.B. Gesamtwirkungsgrad 94% enthält einen Controllerverlust von ca. 1-2%, dies entspricht einemMotorwirkungsgrad (efficient!!!!) von ca. 95-96%.Adequate controllers also available - not any problems (LMT, Schulze, Kontronik ... ca 50V/200A)Or you want sinus? - Bitte! http://www.sinusleistungssteller.de/ Even the best DIY brushless motors has ca 90% efficient and power measured in ...kilowatts.For smaller iron-core ones go to http://www.powercroco.de/

Herr khabe: you obviously know quite a bit about motors You may want to look at the web site at WWW.thor-power.com [www.thor-power.com]. The novelty of the Trezium power system lies in the way the motor is put together - we do not use Liz wire - together with our electronic controller, which can be used with any mains outlet in the world.
Our back-iron is also used for purpose. SMC is very expensive. The devices you refer to are DC motors driven from batteries. Ours is an AC>DC>AC device focused on improving electric efficiency of household/industrial devices, not RC games.
You are correct, 84% Effizienz ist nicht 'gar ned so schlechd', there is great room for improvement. However, it is better than all carbon commutated motors extant today, and we started this project on our own in 2002.
