Making Extra Dimensions Disappear
Posted on Wednesday, April 22, 2009 @ 19:58:01 GMT by vlad

Science ... Extra dimensions. Sounds preposterous at first. Well, perhaps more accurately, it sounds preposterous to most people who don’t do high-energy theory. But, really I assure you, there are many well-motivated reasons why us wacky theorists like to ponder the existence of extra dimensions.

For one, as shown long ago by Kaluza and Klein, it is possible to get Maxwell’s equations of electromagnetism in four dimensions by taking 5 dimensional General Relativity and wrapping one of the spatial dimensions up in a circle too small to see. The smaller the circle is, the harder it is to move in this “other direction,” and so there is no danger in getting lost on the way home. In this way, Maxwell’s equations have an elegant geometrical origin and gravity and electricity & magnatism are combined into one force (5 dimensional gravity)...

Quantum tunnelling of a new, third kind could finally put string theory to the test

Tunneling is the weird and wonderful process by which a quantum particle passes through a potential barrier that a classical particle could not traverse. It comes about because of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle which gives a finite probability for a quantum particle to cross a barrier of specific height and thickness...

At large distances, Einstein’s theory of general relativity describes gravitational physics remarkably well.  However, attempts at defining quantum gravity at arbitrarily short distances based on the Einstein-Hilbert action of general relativity fails.

As modern cosmologists rely more and more on the ominous “dark matter” to explain otherwise inexplicable observations, much effort has gone into the detection of this mysterious substance in the last two decades, yet no direct proof could be found that it actually exists. Even if it does exist, dark matter would be unable to reconcile all the current discrepancies between actual measurements and predictions based on theoretical models. Hence the number of physicists questioning the existence of dark matter has been increasing for some time now.

The new Star Trek movie [www.startrekmovie.com]opens this week, so it’s a good time to ponder the science of space exploration. For example, what would be better for faster-than-light interstellar travel? Warp drive or wormholes?  The new book, Frontiers of Propulsion Science [www.amazon.com], may have the answer. At least in theory.
