Hope, skepticism for cold fusion

By D.C. Denison/ The Boston Globe: The Italian scientist who says he has developed the world’s first cold fusion reactor - a claim that has been hotly contested in scientific circles - visited the State House last week to explore the prospects for developing and manufacturing the device in Massachusetts.
Andrea Rossi made the trip at the invitation of the Senate’s minority leader, Bruce Tarr, a Republican from Gloucester, and met on Tuesday with representatives from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Northeastern University, and the University of Massachusetts.
Rossi’s energy catalyzer, or “E-Cat’’ reactor, is intended to produce
large amounts of energy from a reaction between nickel and hydrogen.
Rossi said the reaction produces heat to heat water, which produces
steam that can be used to generate electricity....

Australian Company Claims to have a Working Fusion Reactor (Score: 1) by vlad on Wednesday, December 07, 2011 @ 23:18:51 UTC (User Info | Send a Message) http://www.zpenergy.com | Is Rossi's E-Cat Yesterday's News? Australian Company Claims to have a Working Fusion Reactor
More Fantastic Than Rossi’s E-Cat
Out of Cleantech [www.cleantechblog.com] via Al Fin Energy [www.alfin2300.blogspot.com]
comes a hint of a nuclear fusion company more fantastic than the Rossi
E-Cat. While the E-Cat is already looking at manufacturing facilities,
the newest drama comes from Australia.
Authors of a fresh Kachan report [www.kachan.com]on
new, safer, cleaner nuclear technology interviewed dozens of scientists
at nuclear research outfits. Almost all fusion organizations are
either pursuing big, capital-intensive tokamaks or other smaller more
innovative reactors. One interviewee in a face-to-face conversation with
the Kachan folks in a location abroad, told of a small company he’s
involved with that he claims has built a working 1MW fusion reactor the
size of a rice cooker. Full story: Is Rossi's E-Cat Yesterday's News? Australian Company Claims to have a Working Fusion Reactor [oilprice.com]

No miracles in science: The story of the "energy catalyzer" (Score: 1) by vlad on Thursday, December 01, 2011 @ 20:54:05 UTC (User Info | Send a Message) http://www.zpenergy.com |

Antonio Turiel is a physicist working at the institute for marine sciences in Barcelona (CSIC) and he keeps the blog " The Oil Crash [crashoil.blogspot.com]," (in Spanish). Here, he he examines the story of the " Energy Catalyser [www.theoildrum.com]"
("E-Cat"); a device proposed by two Italian researchers, Andrea Rossi
and Sergio Focardi and purported to generate energy from a nuclear
reaction occurring at low temperature. This text is an update in English
a post published in Spanish [crashoil.blogspot.com]
on Aug 20, 2010. The conclusion is that the E-Cat cannot be what it is
claimed to be; that is, a device that produces useful energy from
nuclear reactions. The destiny of the "E-Cat" seem therefore to move to the category [cassandralegacy.blogspot.com]
of "pathological science," as the contradictions and the lack of
evidence involved in the concept become more evident. However, the E-Cat
still enjoys a remarkable popularity in the media and has generated a
group of faithful defenders. So, it is important to stress that there
are no miracles in science, and the E-Cat, surely, does not contradict
the rule.
