We need an expensive miracle

Testimonials Any notion that renewables can provide for all our requirements is a mischievous and reckless boast that will leave us in the dark, says Ian Fells

Professor Ian Fells/The Guardian /Thursday September 18 2008

Two imperatives point to the urgent development of renewable energy: security of supply and controlling climate change.

Much the largest source of renewable energy is hydroelectric power, which provides 17% of world electricity (and 6% of world energy), about the same as nuclear power; both are CO2-free. All the other renewables - wind, wave, tidal, solar, biomass (which are either CO2-free or CO-neutral) - hardly feature in the statistics at the present time...

Because......governments insist on a centralised approach.  If they invested in distributed(home) power generation, which also significantly reduces peoples ever increasing fuel bills, the percentage would change significantly.

Anyone who calculates their energy consumption and how that could be generated from wind and solar will soon discover that it is possible.  The problem is that the unit cost of turbines, solar panels and most importantly batteries is still too high (although I suspect significantly cheaper per person than a nulcear power station Nb building and decommisioning costs).  In addition there is no "off the shelf" solution.  I can't go down to my local DIY shop and purchase a kit that includes : VAWT, charge controller, batteries, inverter, information module (to monitor charging status), rewiring loop etc  Sure I can hunt around the net the various bits and pieces but it is most definitely NOT easy. Then there's the plans you would need depening on how you install the "kit":

A. Single sourced power generation, replacing your mains? (this is a single point of failure....not good)
or
B. Multiple sources and multiple battery banks e.g. one per room in the house.  Much more secure, supplies can be switched in case of failure but the wiring is a pain!

What is needed is a black box approach where you decide on your mini power supply (KwH) and the "black boxes" simply plug into one another.

The first (and most important) component is the inverter / charge controller.

Ideally you want something that will accept several DC sources (PV, wind, batteries) and feed your house with 120v - 60 Hz AC.  Also, you want something that will switch over to mains power once your batteries are depleted, and most importantly, you want to be sure that it will not "back-feed" the mains lines if there is a broken wire (dangerous to power company workers)  The best units will also cycle your batteries and monitor everything for you.

Units that meet all of these requirements are usually several thousand dollars.  (steep, but not too horrible.)

Once you have this, you can add DC sources or batteries in small increments.
