It might be "self enclosed" which means speculation on what's "outside" is irrelevant without some form of access. Not to mention higher dimensionality - what's with that?

Saying the universe "must be infinite" because we don't have a concept of "what's outside it" is a weak argument.

Unfortunately for us humans, we tend to think in 3 dimensions. "If the universe is finite, then there has to be something that contains the universe; and that means there has to be something that contains "that something", and so on and so on...".

Why can't the universe "just be"?
Let me ask you this:

If the universe is infinite, how would anything move? If it were infinite, energy would not be able to be transfered, as it would have no boundaries to in which to be "absorbed".

The idea of an infinite universe is simply "soothing" to our minds, since we are currently unable to comprehend the reasons for why it may not be.

It's the same principle for why most humans cling to the idea of an "afterlife". Our minds have a hard time of dealing with the fact that we are only here for a *finite* length of time - which is why we always ask the big question, "What happens to *me* when I die?" Our mind can't comprehend the moment in which we lose our "conciousnes" or "self-awareness".
We don't recall anything before we became self-aware - because there was no "we" - and I think we won't recall anything after death - It'll be just as if we had never been. I think we will simply cease to be. The next consious being that enters the universe (possibly an alien in a distant world), will have a sense of "self" and probably ask the same questions we're asking now. But it's the same idea with the universe. Why does there have to be anything outside of it, just like why does there have to be anything after death? Deep and philosophical I know, but I think the answers are all more simple than we believe...
