Recently Mark McCutcheon put out a book that he calls The Final Theory: Rethinking Our Scientific Legacy. In it he presents his view of how the universe works -- a new kind of expansion theory. It is a pretty radical idea, but it definitely gives us a different way of looking at the world.

In his book McCutcheon has also identified a lot of the serious problems with the Standard Model and attempts to provide ways to resolve them with his theory. D. A. White, who has his own theory of how things work, has written a review ("The Final Final Theory?") discussing the ideas in McCutcheon's book and comparing them with the Standard Model and his own ideas -- an approach that he calls Observer Physics. If we want to resolve the deep theoretical problems in physics as well as the serious practical problems we face such as how to develop abundant, clean energy resources and reduce environmental pollution, it seems we might do well to carefully consider any and all thoughtful proposals.

You can read and/or download White's review article plus a lot of other articles by White that are posted at his Observer Physics website, www.dpedtech.com.
