Wilma the Super Storm and Energy from the Vacuum
Posted on Friday, October 21, 2005 @ 07:25:42 UTC by vlad

Science sterlingda writes: Paul Noel, not far from this hurricane, reflects on the dynamics of this record-breaking weather phenomenon, principles of physics and atmosphere, and ramifications for unlimited energy from the vacuum of space.

Story ends:

For those interested in the issues of potential "Weather Control" and alternative energy generation in the exotic areas this is all an area of related physics. This is very much related to the Zero Point Energy (ZPE) and to the issues of Tesla's energy theories. It gets very much into the area of how the whole universe works. It gets into stellar physics real fast.

For those not so schooled in the issues, a starter course would be to note that the Hurricane is boiling off millions of tons of water into the atmosphere and then essentially quick freezing it. In this condensation location it should be evolving all this heat into hot air but is actually extremely cold. In order for this cold to exist even for a moment under this rapid condensation (Heat recovery phase) it has to be pumping this energy off into space either as hot air (which it is not) or by electromagnetic means. The electromagnetic freeze "ray" is beaming the energy away fast. The amount here is equal the detonation of a 20 megaton Hydrogen bomb every few minutes. To strip the planet of this much heat this fast requires an ionic short circuit into deep space.

If this hasn't confused you, then you are well on your way to understanding hurricanes and similar storms. It also removes any doubt that there is plenty of energy around to be used. This is the fast trip into the wild and wooly side of physics that is not popular with the tired old heads that dominate the field. (Don't bother those guys they are mean and they don't take evidence well. This stuff upsets them a lot.) Curiously this also links up with the geologic side of the planet as well. Remember all energy transfers go two ways. Yes there is a relationship though it isn't well understood between the recent earthquakes and these storms. They are connected in the energy circulation on this planet and the stellar space surrounding earth.

I threw in this report to get the Alternative Energy guys juices flowing. There is lots of energy out there. We have no shortage. We just don't know how to use it right now. Nature is dropping us a hint. Imagine being able to tap into a small fraction of the energy flowing around this storm. Even an hour's energy for this storm would drive the USA for a long time.

A hurricane is a "convection roll" for those of you knowledgeable with Chaos Theory, just another way that energy can organise itself when passing from one form to another.

The bad news is, those convection rolls turn themselves sideways by the rotation of the Earth and start moving, powered by solar energy they funnel that energy down onto the happless humans below with no thought of the consequences.

The other bad news that can be conferred from Chaos Theory is that the atmosphere must be reaching that chaotic point  more often, due to human activity.

Say what?

Any link to zero point energy has not been shown by the article as-worded.  It is too loosely worded to draw any specific conclusions.

There seems no reason to invoke zero point energy as playing a role in hurricane energy dynamics.  The fact is that in the normal scale of natural energy sources, "a 20 megaton Hydrogen bomb every few minutes" is minuscule.  Let me prove it:

20 megatons TNT is 8.4 x 10^16 joules of energy.  I don't know what you mean by a "few minutes" but lets assume you mean about 10 minutes, which  is 600 seconds.  Dividing, one obtains the hurricane's power in watts, which works out to 1.4 x 10^14 watts.

Let's say the hurricane's diameter is 300 miles, okay?  At a radius r of 150 miles--that's 240 kilometers--the area of the hurricane is 180.9 thousand square kilometers, or 1.8 x 10^11 square meters.

So the power in watts per square meter of the hurricane is the total power divided by the area, yes?  That works out to 774 watts per square meter.

Say that's just about a horsepower per square meter, by the way.

Now, given that the hurricane is at low latitudes, down in the tropics, sunlight falls nearly straight down unto the water and weather there.  Solar energy is at its most intense and direct angle.  In near earth space there's around 1300 watts per square meter of solar power.  Depending on how much upper atmosphere absorption is taking place, one still obtains about 1000 to 1100 watts per square meter incoming at the surface of the earth.  Thus there is enough energy influx from know sources--in real-time--to reasonably account for the energy dynamics of hurricanes.

Of course, the real energy source is warmed water, which had many days to get warmed and holds much more energy than my back-of-the envelope calculation suggests.  "Real-time" solar power flows are not necessary.

There is no mysterious amount of energy in hurricanes, sorry.  But I encourage you to think about how best to tap and use that enormous energy!
