New Permanent Magnet Axial Gap Motor Developed
Posted on Tuesday, April 15, 2003 @ 22:47:50 UTC by vlad

Aux-Equipment matt writes: Not exactly over unity, but 90 to 95 percent efficiency ain’t bad… A company said its new motor has high efficiency, high power density, high peak torque across a wide speed range and fast transient response. The motor is aimed at developers of fuel cells and refrigeration compressors.

In a press release, Lynx Motion Technology Corporation reports its new motor has high efficiency, high power density, high peak torque across a wide speed range and fast transient response. The motor will most likely interest developers of fuel cell and refrigeration compressors. From the article: Lynx Motion Technology Corporation http://www.lynxmotiontechnology.com recently announced the development of a new permanent magnet axial gap motor primarily designed for fuel cell and refrigeration compressors and now available for licensing and manufacturing. Principal characteristics of the new motor are very high efficiency, high power density, high peak torque across a wide speed range, and very fast transient response. The motor development was funded under a Cooperative Automotive Research for Advanced Technology (CARAT) grant from the Department of Energy, and a design contract with a Lynx customer. Manufacturing costs are expected to be under $100 once they are produced in volume. The initial customer is expected to generate the volume required to achieve that cost. "This motor will be especially valuable to fuel cell developers and manufacturers who demand high air pressure to minimize condensation and high efficiency to stem parasitic losses while achieving high transient responses, and at a cost far below that of previously developed high performance motors", said Gerald Chalfin, chief executive officer and president of Lynx. This particular motor, as designed for the first customer, is 9 inches in diameter (225mm), less than 2 inches (50mm) in axial length and weighs 18.7 lbs (8.5kg) with the housing. Depending on the specific application requirements, the motor achieves efficiency from 95% to 98%, peak power of up to 13.6 hp (9kw), and peak torque of over 70lbf-ft (97N-m). The current design can be configured to produce 1.3 kw to 8kw constant power depending on speed, torque, and ambient operating conditions. The specifications can be viewed at http://www.lynxmotiontechnology.com/e225.htm.%0D %0D About Lynx Motion Technology: Lynx was established in 1996 to commercialize Segmented Electro-Magnetic Array (SEMA) technology, BLDC PM motors of superior efficiency, power density, and reliability. Current licensees include Bodine Electric, Chicago, IL, iPower Technologies Inc., Anderson, IN, and Jore Corp., Ronan, MT. Products and markets that have been licensed to date include industrial motors, distributed power generators, and battery operated power tools. As an ironless motor, the SEMA motor experiences no hysteresis losses nor any cogging. This is especially valuable in servo applications where smooth, quiet, and precise movement, as well as high peak torque is required. Lynx does not manufacture these motors but licenses the technology to motor manufacturers or volume users of motors who want to control their own supplies. Orders for prototype samples of this motor are being accepted for second quarter delivery. For more info: http://www.lynxmotiontechnology.com/applications.htm
