House Republicans Scorn Environment in Favor of Oil and Gas

WASHINGTON, DC, September 29, 2005 (ENS) -
Two House committees on Wednesday advanced
post-hurricane legislation that relaxes environmental regulations on
oil refineries and opens much of the nation’s coast and the Arctic
National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas development.
Republican leaders said the impact of Hurricanes Rita and
Katrina on energy prices exposed the need to boost domestic energy
supplies and ease regulation of the nation’s energy infrastructure,
despite the recent passage of a $16 billion energy bill.
"We cannot stop hurricanes, but we can mitigate some of the adverse
impacts on our energy infrastructure and our economy that hurricanes
can cause," said House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Joe
Barton, a Texas Republican.
Critics said the new energy legislation does little to help consumers
with rising energy costs and rolls back regulations that protect public
health and the environment.
The legislation is "a hastily crafted, minimally reviewed bill of
dubious virtue," that does nothing to address the nation’s growing
demand for energy, said Representative John Dingell, a Michigan
Democrat and ranking member of the Energy and Commerce Committee...
The bill relaxes parts of the Clean Air Act, including the New Source
Review program that require refineries and coal-fired power plants to
install new pollution equipment when they expand operations...
The changes are in line with revisions proposed by the Bush administration that have been challenged in court by states,
environmentalists and public health advocates.
In addition, the bill eases federal ozone standards and gives states
broader authority to opt out of federal pollution clean up plans.
The legislation requires the President to designate sites on
federal lands – such as closed military bases – for new refineries and
provides risk insurance to companies building new refineries. It gives
the U.S. Energy Department oversight of refinery permits and reduces
local and state input into siting decisions.
"Our country needs more oil refineries because the people who work for a living need gasoline to get to work," Barton said.

(User Info | Send a Message) | After 9-11 the Congress was herded into throwing away the Constitutional rights of the people. In the aftermath of Katrina and Rita, ones right to live without pollution will be gone. What everyone should understand is that there is no guarrantee that there's any more oil to be found in those places, even in ANWR. Any drilling offshore of the east coast would be subject to the same dangers as the oil rigs in the Gulf.Whats the Congress' Plan B after that?
We've had a thirty year heads up period for the energy crisis, back in the 70's satellite mapping had identified all the possible locations of oil deposits, and it wasn't long before the analysts had a time frame for oil depletion worldwide. After 30 years of status quo and heads in the sand, we're at the end of that time frame. Time is up,and the crisis has arrived.
The Congress, the Media,and Big Oil have played their hand, they have no cards left to put on the table, yet they expect everyone else to fold on their bluff.

anti-prosperity lefties will lose the right to stop or endlessly delay
every worthwhile energy project anywhere?
And you're still pushing the thououghly debunked "running out of oil"
argument? Heads in the sand, indeed. You're talking about
Canadian oil sand, perhaps, with reserves as big as those of the Saudis?
But wait, your two arguments, bogus as they are, are also
contradictory. You say we'll smother in pollution from refineries
which have run out of crude to refine. Which is it?

I knew many Eskimos that lived in the area. I walked all over that tundra. I swam in the spring runoff water off the tundra on one of the few warm daus in the Artic. I quickly peeled off my clothes and hurried into the water to try to get ahead of the skeeties. It is the only place in the WORLD that the mosquitos can stand flat footed and breed the chickens. It is 40 mile to the Brooks Range. the rest is BuTT ugly. You stop and look at it for 10 minutes and you have a picture to last a lifetime. It is no where as beutiful as Mt. Mc Kinley or the road up to Wonder Lake at the foot of Denali. I have killed over a dozen Woodland caribou and several arctic caribou which aren't worth packing out or carrying home. They don't make edible dog food for sled dogs. The eskimos say" Ug moose and bear meat for the men, women eat caribou." In other words if you are a work around trhe house person you might survive but if you live or work outside you will freeze or starve do death waste deep in barren land caribou. You tree huggers that think we must save that scenery for postereity should be air lifted to ANWR and forced to spend 3 days and 3 nights there, that would cure you for sure.It is completely inhospitable. There are a few snowshoe rabits, Ptarmigan and lots of white fox in the winter. Most of them starving to death. There are no polar bears on the shore unless they get real hungry and have to raid the garbage pits. Trust me you will be begging to get air lifted out in 24 hours. Even a poorly informed tree hugger has to know that when they put the 40 inch pipe in the heat from the hot oil that flowed through the pipe in the summer made a super highway for the caribou to migrate on and the warm climate along the pipe made the richest grazing on the whole coast and the herd increased by 25% in 2 years and has continued to expand since. Don't be emotional twits fellows or as Arnold said girly boys. Your comments about we don't know the size of the field is foolish we have known since 1946 since the preserve was created for war time duress times that we needed to go in in the summer when the coast is open with lots of tankers and take out oil needed for the navy that we had just survived in the big one,WII Thanks folks I have been waiting for a long time on this web site to vent my spleen on you sissys who couldn't survive a week. |

You should wake up and realise there is a bigger world beyond your fence line. Just because 'it's a challenge' to live there does not mean you can march in and rape the environment and alter the delicate balance it has, in fact your statements that the pipeline is responsible for creating an alteration that you think is positive are exactly the sort of assinine and ignorant statements that should serve to illustrate to people conservative/liberal US dynamist extremism.
You just cannot accept or concede that there are opposites that must exist. I guess if you had your way you would destroy all the bacteria that lives on your skin? Or all the bugs that live in your eye lashes? I mean, I hate to 'burst your bubble' but even though you probably are not aware of all these symbiotic relationships, they exist for YOUR sake.
Well Alaskan environments and the delicate environment is more than simply the struggle of the fauna there, there are delicate geological sinks and sources of the energy flows that exist, that are upset by the very oil you are so addicted to, that is being used in other areas. You think fences and divisions are permanent or infinite? Your linearist mindset is an epic example of religious and cosmic ignorance, it will be historically the most tangible example of destructive thinking.
Mate, vent your spleen all you like but take note that you are cleary beyond reason when you are unwilling to think of alternatives, oither things exist to maintain balance, but ofcourse you and your 'ilk' are so unwilling to see this balance you would rather obliterate what is 'alternative', and the irony is that you are simply destroying yourself. Well some are knowledgable enough and caring enough to note that your 'ways' are not simply untenable, because they know of the danger you put us all in, but also because they have enough conscience to see your salvation as important too, that my friend is balance, something you may be incapable of ever understanding.

There really is no god. Cause you would say he is a republican, and a god would never concede such a thing, therefore, a priori, we are on our own.

We are by standards only known to literate and educated folks the greatest civilization in history of man. If don't know history you are bound to repeat them ntil you too learn by its mistakes.
You speak of metaphysics, so you ust be a devotee of Edgar Casey, and perhaps Ann Rand. You have alreadty conceded that you are either an aetheist or an agnostic. I havent met you so can't tell if you are into gnostism or are into the perversion of glutony, but you surely have a passion that is at the core of your soul. I know that you are not bright enough to have conned the left into floating your passage here. Surely communism hasn't enough money left in their purse to waste on such an intellectual slaggard as you are stuck in the eithics and philosophy of the '30's and40's. You haven't caught on to modern day pragmatism. If it works do it. Why did you come and why do you stay. We would, many of us get together to raise the money for your passage even if it be by expensive air travel. There are so many waiting to take your place in our society that want to learn from it and contribute to it and share in the fruitfullnes of its continued creation and the sucess that flows from the bounty of its industrious product. We very well know how we got here our Maker is known to nearly all of us. How good of you to make your ontlogical position or lack of it that clearly roped you into that old out of body experiences and your past lives and what a very marginal group share that with you. Somewhere less than one tenth of one percent. It's just that I can't stand it when there are groups that push an idea of what you speak without involving the individual's knowledge, and in fact attempt to suppress the truth from view for their vested interests, and energy paradigms, weather control and militiarianism is no different.
America is great, and yes, (without a comparitive reference off planet) it is the best civilisation, but if there is anything to go by in history it is that civilisations DO not last, but individuals do, and in whatever form that may be is NOT important. Form my change, but function is always the same.
Just be aware that functionalism is a part of your way too, and the balance is all I was pointing out, I want your way to last, but NOT at the expense of others.
Please be more 'forgiving' of your own shortcomings before you claim I am being irrational, I will be the first to admit I do not have all the answers, but that is no excuse to claim blindly that some 'religion', 'culture', 'government', 'science' or 'political party' does, that is the height of irresponsibility, all of those things are naught without you and me, being positive, and progressive, and BALANCED. |
