Dear Koen,
To say that it is a magnetic polarization of the 'ether gas' is indeed a perfect way to look at it, except that I would have thought of the unpolarized state, more in terms of an amorphous liquid rather than a gas, and I reserve the word ether/aether for the more mysterious substance of the vacuum which exists between the electrons and positrons and probably causes the electrostatic force. I call the amorphous liquid 'The Electric Sea'.
Polarization of the electric sea between the plates of a capacitor is indeed a linear version of the same overall phenomenon. It doesn't mean that magnetism and polarization are the same thing, but they do overlap.
One more important point. The vortices (electron positron dipoles) must all rotate in the same direction. That is fundamental for keeping in line with Maxwell's 1861 paper, and for maintaining the double helix pattern which is essential for supplying the axial tension in the magnetic field lines.
On Tesla, I would like to get some references on his work, but I understand that alot of it is unavailable.
Are you advocating an electron positron ether gas?

Dear Koen,
Further to my reply of yesterday, I wish to once again emphasize the fact, that in the magnetized state, the dipoles will all be aligned along their axial planes, rotating in the same direction, and that the individual electrons and positrons within each dipole will be rotating in the same direction.
Your reasons for suggesting otherwise were that you think that they need to be rotating in opposite directions in order to maintain the 'ether current'.
I don't consider any such 'ether current' to be necessary for the purposes of a magnetic field. The only current which ever occurs in the electric sea (which you call the ether) is Maxwell's displacement current. The magnetic field is not based on any current within the actual electric sea. It is based on electrostatic tension within the solenoidal columns of dipoles.
                         Yours sincerely
