    I voted "Other" because important ideas need more protection than patents can at first provide. An individual inventor can keep the intellectual property a trade secret for a very long time until an adequate investor is found.
    An item with a consortium of inventors is a more difficult situation, which may require an immediate patent.

    Why do people believe that getting a patent first - for such a disruptive technology as a FE device - is the best & safest path???

    NONE of the patented devices (that we know of) made it out into production (so far)! Probably, the best ones, we don't even know about, being under the 1954 Secrecy Order Act, from the day they're submitted!

    Immediately going public (ala Steorn) with a working prototype's successful testing (no need to disclose the trade secrets yet) is THE ONLY WAY that would guarantee protection (IP/patent and physical), investors and $. Period.
